Three Trees Stood on a Hill

Three trees stood on a hill thinking about their future. One wanted to carry the riches of the world and the treasures of kings and queens. Another wanted to be made into a sailing ship and carry kings and queens to their destinations. The last wanted to stay on the hill and grow tall and grand so when people saw it they would think of God.

Years later they were all three cut down. The first was made into a simple feeding trough. The second was made into a small fishing boat. The third was cut into beams and set aside.

Not long after, the Savior of the World was placed into the simple feeding trough on the night of His birth. Several years later the Savior calmed the mighty seas during a storm while in the small fishing boat. A short time later the beams were nailed together into a cross and the Savior’s hands and feet were nailed to it. All three trees were granted their wish, though not in the way they thought it would happen. Prayers are answered in a myriad of ways and in their own time.

This one is actually an old one. I did it in Fall of 1999. I had several people tell me they would love a print of it so I finally decided to get it scanned and make some prints. I got some photographic prints that look great and also some giclee prints that look amazing. This painting is done on raw canvas so the linen paper of the giclee print makes it look very much like the original.

Why is there a bird on her head? I don't know, it just felt the need to land there. Or, maybe it is part of the hat (thought it is a bit large to be part of the hat...). In a slump

Lately I've been in a bit of a slump. I have two completed paintings that I did last week that I really don't like. I was trying out some different techniques and designs but they didn't work. I think one of them didn't work because it wasn't really my "style". I was venturing out a bit but didn't feel very inspired while I was starting it and it showed. I ended up gessoing over one of the paintings and will probably do the same with the second one. I also started another larger painting a couple of days ago and it is mostly finished but I again don't love it. It has potential but I'm not sure what to do with it.

I don't like these times when my good creativity is turned off. I hope in the next few days I'll be inspired again and do some paintings I'm proud to put my name on. Until then I'll struggle through.

I started working on this one months ago, though it seems like last year. I reworked the background several times before I was happy with it. Then I put it aside for a while, I think I was scared of finishing it because I wasn't sure it would turn out quite right. I haven't painted with black for years (other than the black outlines in most of my paintings). It was a color that suited my darker mood years ago but I haven't even thought about using it for a main color for some time. I had a pretty dark day the other day and did a black, red and white drippy painting that was too big for my scanner so I'll have to include it later. I decided I wanted to carry on the color scheme and try a flower. I really like the way it turned out.

I was trying to do some pretty little flowers but I didn't like most of my color choices, a lot of things weren't working that day, including my creativity. So, instead of forcing myself to continue on while hating what I was doing I "trashed" the paintings. Some of them turned out pretty well, others I don't like as much.

These were painted after Swallow with Swirly Flowers but I am just now getting them up. The good thing about painting small and on paper is that I can scan paintings instead of having to photograph them. I don't have the best scanner though, so some of the images are off, even after correcting them the best I could in Photoshop.

I have 5 more completed paintings that I did shortly after Swallow with Swirly Flowers to post but the light went bad on me this morning. I take my pictures outside so I have to wait for good days to take pictures. Some of the good days I miss because I'm doing other things. Anyway, when it gets cloudy but not dark and windy (yesterday I was almost blown over) I'll take some more pictures and get them posted.

Orange and Red Trees with new signature

I loved the color scheme of the Small Orange and Red Trees so much that I decided to do a larger one. All said and done, I like the small one the best. These trees are too uniform. I still like it well enough to hang it up in my house, until it gets sold that is. I think I'll do some more trees, in different colors and different sizes.

Notice the new signature. If it were up to me I would leave the signature off of my paintings because I think the signature detracts from the composition. Alas, I want people to know who's paintings they are so I include it. My last signature worked for many years, but I finally decided it was too long (thanks for my long maiden name Dad). No one can read it anyway, so I opted for this signature instead. It also incorporates my married name (which my husband is happy about). I can also do it really small so it is not as obtrusive in the composition.

I forgot to upload this one before the last post of the trees. This one was actually done before the trees. I really just HAD to do another in orange and yellow. The dirt and rocks where I live are red/orange and I really wanted to do a stack of rocks or a cairn. We see a lot of them on the hiking trails here and have a picture of my daughter reaching out to touch one. Maybe a little too uniform but oh well. I didn't draw it out before I started painting, sometimes this work and other times it doesn't turn out as well.

I was again looking at Jessica Torrant's portfolio and saw one of her paintings that reminded me of a landscape with one shape that looked very much like a tree.

I knew right away that I wanted to do a painting of trees again, but in a very different style than my last trees. I think I really love trees. They are just so lovely and can be so many different colors and shapes. So many options for new and different paintings.

As you can see, I didn't make it very long before I used red, yellow and orange again. I can't help it. They truly are my favorite colors. I liked this color scheme so much I decided to do a big one much the same.

Couldn't help but put a little red in this one. I think it works well though. Again, I like the way rocks stack up on themselves. This reminds me a little of a slice of the earth, through the rocks and down beyond. Not quite the colors I would imagine would be actually in the earth though. Brown is just too boring for me though.

Mostly Round, Mostly Green

I've been intrigued by Jessica Torrant's art lately. I found out about her just a little while ago. I like the way she outlines all her shapes and then uses a flat color to fill them in. I actually tried to duplicate Jessica's style (purely for experimentation, not trying to copy and pass off as my own), just to see if I could do it. I couldn't even make the first mark on the canvas. I'm just not able to be that free I guess. I need more of a plan in mind before I can start. So, a new style of my own (with Jessica Torrant influence) is emerging. I'm not abandoning my old styles, just branching out a little. I think I have a mild form of painters ADD.

I love the background on this one! It is hard to see because of the crummy picture though. I really like the white glaze in the middle of the flowers. I'm probably going to do the swirly flowers that way from now on.

I did a smaller version of this painting as a gift and liked it so much I decided to do a larger one. I started it months ago before my move but was quite distracted and it took a long time to come back to it. I think part of the reason was I wasn't liking where it was going after so many starts and stops. It was good to finally get it finished and out of my to do pile. I might do another painting similar but without the black outlines.

I've been inspired by a few different artists lately and wanting to play around with watercolor techniques using acrylic paints. This is the result. I love the little green line in between the white and the dark red toward the bottom of the painting. This is something you have to get pretty close to the painting to even see. I might still go back and make the line more bold.

Trees

I've been thinking about trees for years and wanting to paint some so I gave it a try last month.

Much better picture than the last one. In my bright and sunny world I have to wait for a partly cloudy day and then take pictures quickly while the sun is behind the clouds. It takes a while to get good pictures, especially when my two kids are trying to feed me pretend food (sand and rocks) or getting their shadows in the way.

Most of the time when I start some new kind of painting I like the original painting the best, but in this case I like the second painting best, mostly. I like the color of the sky in the first painting best.
