Vibrant Sunset

I have some amazing pictures of sunsets so I thought I would attempt one of them.  I like the color contrasts and the composition.  I still have to work on the execution of clouds though.  I'm sure there are more to come in the future.

I like the vibrancy of this little painting.  Sometimes it is nice to work in watercolor again.

I dreamed of this one while in that space between waking and sleeping.  Don't know what it means or if the title really fits but I kind of like it.

Pulling Away

This one is actually an old one.  I did it in Fall of 1999. I had several people tell me they would love a print of it so I finally decided to get it scanned and make some prints.  I got some photographic prints that look great and also some giclee prints that look amazing.  This painting is done on raw canvas so the linen paper of the giclee print makes it look very much like the original.

Leaves and Flowers

Not a great photo, but oh well.  A lovely woman brought me a throw pillow she wanted me to base a painting from.  There were a few minor changes but the finished painting is pretty much like the pillow.  The embroidery on the pillow was so much like my style that it was easy to paint.  Commission works like these are always fun for me to do

Little Monkey on Yellow

This little guys was something of a test for a kid's series monkey.  I think he turned out kind of sweet.  More monkeys to come after the holidays.

Nessie from Loch Ness

 Introducing Nessie from Loch Ness.  She finally came out of hiding so I had to paint her quickly.  I've had plans to add to the children's series for a while now but only just got motivated.  I have plans for more but won't spoil the suprise of what animals I'm going to do.

I'm playing more with backgrounds lately.  Not sure I love this technique but I'm going for a more understated background so the foreground takes precedence.  This bunny reminds me a little bit of a bunny in a children's book I read to my kids not too long ago.  I like the way the shirt turned out.

Another bird girl, I'm not going to make up a story for this one though, you can use your imagination.  This painting is matted with a 1" white mat and framed in  a 6x8" white frame.  More pictures of the frame to follow.

Bird On Her Head

Why is there a bird on her head?  I don't know, it just felt the need to land there. Or, maybe it is part of the hat (thought it is a bit large to be part of the hat...). She obviously likes birds, just take a look at her shirt, so she doesn't mind having it on her head. This painting is matted with a 1" white mat and framed in  a 6x8" white frame.  More pictures of the frame to follow.

This one was done as a baby shower present for a friend so it is not for sale.  The colors were a bit specific to the decor of the nursery.  I liked it so much that I did another one though.

Again, playing around with colors for the trees.  Also playing around with different overall shape of the tree. Not sure how I feel about this one yet. Sometimes I have to put a painting away for a while and when I pull it out again I will often decide I really like it.

Daydreaming Flower Fairy

I've been wanting to paint figures for some time but have been trying to figure out a way to draw them to my liking.  I love this artist. Her style is whimsical and delightful. She gave me quite a bit of inspiration for finally coming up with my own drawings for figures.

I did this one a few months back but realized recently that I never took a picture of it.  This isn't a great picture but oh well. I like the way the painting turned out.  A little different than my other styles but I still like it.

I did this one a while back as well.  It is actually quite similar to one I did before here that I sold.  This one is larger and a bit darker with a slightly different composition. 

Balloons in Flight set

I've been wanting to paint some balloons for a few months but haven't gotten around to it until now.  I have several of these little 4x6" canvases that now seem a little small for single paintings.  I decided to try and group them together somehow and the idea of the balloons seemed like a great subject to paint on them.

Landscape

This painting is actually a copy of one I did several years ago but don't have a photograph of.  The first one was really loose and done in a watercolor type style with thinned down oils.  I liked it so much I thought I would do one on canvas. This one turned out much different though.  Overall I still like it but I like the spontaneity of the first one best.

Calla Lily Diptych

There are aspects of this painting that I love but on a whole I'm just not sure of it yet.  I'll leave it as is for a while and might readdress it at a later date.

In a slump

Lately I've been in a bit of a slump. I have two completed paintings that I did last week that I really don't like. I was trying out some different techniques and designs but they didn't work. I think one of them didn't work because it wasn't really my "style". I was venturing out a bit but didn't feel very inspired while I was starting it and it showed. I ended up gessoing over one of the paintings and will probably do the same with the second one. I also started another larger painting a couple of days ago and it is mostly finished but I again don't love it. It has potential but I'm not sure what to do with it.

I don't like these times when my good creativity is turned off. I hope in the next few days I'll be inspired again and do some paintings I'm proud to put my name on. Until then I'll struggle through.

Baby Turtle in Cattails

I started working on this one months ago, though it seems like last year. I reworked the background several times before I was happy with it. Then I put it aside for a while, I think I was scared of finishing it because I wasn't sure it would turn out quite right. When I finally picked it up again a couple of weeks ago I was able to finish it fairly quickly. Just goes to show me that sometimes if I'm having a problem with a painting I might need to put it aside for a while and come back to it later.
